LPL and Commonwealth Using Asset Level to Calculate Recruiting Deals

February 1st, 2022, 12:00 AM

According to WealthManagement.com, Commonwealth Financial Network confirmed that it recently changed the way it structures deals it offers prospects as an incentive to join its ranks.

Instead of the historical norm, Commonwealth offers forgivable notes based on an advisor's asset levels. A third-party recruiter stated the deals span from 30 to 35 basis points on assets. LPL Financial has structured deals around asset levels for at least a year. According to recruiters, LPL offers about 40 basis points on assets to recruits.

According to Ryan Shanks, co-founder, and CEO of FA Match, the new calculation is more commonplace among independent broker-dealers within the past 18 to 24 months. Shanks shared that the calculation is a better way to structure the deals as advisors' books of business become increasingly fee-based.
